How to build a community within a community -- user tags?

Hi there,  I recently attended a user group call in march and they spoke about using user tags? for creating a community within a community?  I just launched our Gather community and wanted to create a smaller segment community for our Customer Advisory members so that they can collaborate with each other and our SMEs.  Has anyone in the user group done this with their Gather community?

Hi Eileen!

Thanks for attending our March meet up. I recall this convo and can share how we use tags and segments to achieve this.

We also have a sub-community area for our customer advisory members. We gate access to this by using tags on the users themself and then create a segment based off that tag. You'd achieve that through something like this.

  1. Create the tag. You can do this by just adding it to a user's profile. Something like customer_advisory. You'd add this same tag to all the members. If you had a field in your contact details, you could have it auto-add a tag if it was checked or something like that too. Note that this same tag can be added to an organization or tickets.
  2. Next, in Guide Admin, you want to create a Segment (see more here). Click “Add new”, name your Segment, and use the filter for “Users and organizations matching ANY of these tags”, denoting your newly created tag. You can also manually add any folks you want internally or even set it so any one at your own internal org could access it. You can mix match criteria here. This also shows who has access based off your criteria.
  3. Lastly,  also from Guide Admin, you'd create a new Community topic. From the User segment selection when you create the new topic, you'd choose your newly created Segment. Once created, only the content found in this topic is visible to those listed in the segment. You can also use this same Segment for Help content that can be gated by segments.

Any future folks you were to apply the tag to would automatically be added to this segment. When you view a contact in Zendesk too, it shows which segments they have access to in their profile too, so you can confirm if they have it. Conversely, removing the tag from them also removes the access.

Does this make sense? Let me know if you have any questions on the above or need anything else. Have a great rest of your day in the meantime. Cheers!
