I am trying to implement a functionality on desktop site where if the chat popup hidden and a new message arrives, the user should be able to see number of unread chats on the chat label. I was not able to find any function in documentation which could return such data. Can someone please assist?

This is actually a default functionality of the widget, and requires no additional script. The minimized widget would show the number of unread messages to the user. Here's a screenshot of how it looks:
