I am not a big fan of Zendesk explorer, I believe it's too static and difficult to work with. What alternatives are there to this? In a previous company, we use to export via zendesk API to a BI platform (company-wide) called "metabase". For non-zendesk explorer users, what are you guys using currently to pull reports? Excel? Power BI? Is there any free tools that you can suggest?

Nothing too fancy yet - just Excel. Now that Explore outputs data as built to Excel, it's easy to just cut and paste my new results into my Excel models (staffing models is mostly what I have today outside of Explore). Some of my engineers use the API to get their team data out of Zendesk.
Same here, I am using excel to build reports and pivot tables. It's easier to manipulate data.
But I am extracting from data from Data export
I use Tableau to create reports. From Zendesk to Tableau, I am using Acho Studio to extract data since it supports updating data automatically and exporting data to Tableau directly.
