We'd like to stage a second brand in sandbox, do our testing, then replicate in live. If we address the sandbox as "secondbrand.zendesk.com", if we delete the sandbox, will we be able to use "secondbrand.zendesk.com" for our live instance?
If I use a subdomain for my sandbox, can I use the same one in live?

You will not be able to reuse the subdomain if you do it the way you described. I would recommend using "secondbrand-test.zendesk.com" as the brand subdomain in your sandbox. That way you can leave the proper name you'd like to use as the brand's subdomain in your production Zendesk account.

Subdomains are unique for each account, this applies to both production and sandbox accounts. Even after deleting a Sandbox account, the same subdomain is not considered released so it can't be used for another account (production or sandbox account).
You may raise a ticket with our support team directly and we'll be glad to assist in the process of releasing the subdomain so you can use it for another account.

I strongly recommend that zendesk team look into it, because it's not normal that we are penalized for something done in sandbox account! When we are creating the brand in a Zendesk sandbox acount there's not even warning saying that this subdomain will not be available ever again or that to be able to use it again it's complicated process wich involved the account owner. The same way when creating the sandbox there's a bunch of number after the brand name when creating a new brand those number should be added by default.

Amie's comment above is correct. You cannot use the same subdomain for both your production and Sandbox account. The subdomain must be unique for every account since you will be using it as your login URL, I agree with the recommendation to just add 'secondbrand-test' instead to be used for testing.
